Outdoor Focus Week

This week we are learning about the outdoors as well as carrying out some of our learning outdoors. We started by looking at some of the different bodies of water. The children matched the image, name and definitions and the discussed how these could be grouped. Following from this the children chose 3 bodies of water to carry out further research about and create informative posters.

During this week, children made fires and toasted a marshmallow on it, built dens and went pond dipping. They also sketched the outdoor environment and also carried out an investigation to clean dirty water.

Train Safety Trip

Today the children have been on a train ride from New Pudsey to Leeds where they were greeted by Chloe from Network Rail. All of the children took part in a range of different sessions which were planned to inform and educate the children.

Network Rail covered what their role is within the railway, how to use and remain safe when in or around a train track/station; this included discussing what is available to support you on your journey such as staff and how to use departure boards.

Cross Country Trains covered the basics of their train company emphasising that they cover long distance journeys, they also explained why travelling train is better for the environment.

British Transport Police explained their role and informed the children what they should do if they ever required help when travelling by train. They provided the children with important contact information as well as the experience of sitting in the police van.

Northern Rail allowed children to immerse themselves in the situation of getting a train including what to expect from the journey and the role of a conductor and ticket inspector. The children were very surprised to hear how serious it is to try and travel without paying the fare.

Leeds United Foundation supported the children in carrying out physical activities and related the to stopping distance when travelling at speed.

At the end of the sessions we were met by 'Whistle' (Northern Rail Mascot) and provided with a goody bag. It was a very informative afternoon which engaged the children in gaining a better understanding of how to stay safe when in and around train lines.

Science

Year 6 had a special afternoon revisiting learning from Autumn Term. Nutritank is a student community that promotes evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine within medical education to improve health. Anjolaoluwa Sofuyi, who is a medical student and President of Nutritank Leeds, came to deliver a hands-on lesson about the importance of a balanced diet.

Debating

This morning the children have worked with Mrs O'Sullivan on debating. This is part of a project we are doing which will result in a debating competition as part of our Owlcotes Element - A way with words.

During the session, the children learnt what debating is, skills which are important in debating and then completed some speaking and listening tasks including vote with your feet and conscience alley. Whenever the children were asked to share a response they were asked to use full sentences.

Brownlee Triathlon

Today, 29 children from Y5/6 travelled to John Smeaton Leisure Centre to take part in the Brownlee Triathlon. As part of this, the children completed a 50m swim, 800m cycle and 300m run. This was not competitive and the focus was more about trying a new event or achieving a personal challenge.

French - À l'école (At School)

Today we consolidated all vocabulary taught in the previous lessons and progressed to learning how to give an opinion in both positive and negative form about each school subject in the foreign language.

Derek brought the Book Fair to school today. During our session with him, he shared some riddles with the children.

Y6 Food Technology

This was the last session for this group of children. They decided in the previous week after looking at seasonal foods to make onion bhajis, raita and rhubarb crumble. This was a bit of a challenge in 90 minutes but the group did well and took on a range of roles to ensure we were successful. The rhubarb was freshly picked from our school allotment by the children at the beginning of the session.

RE posters to show different Rites of Passage

Over the past few weeks, we have been using The Piano to write a narrative flashback. The children have worked really hard on including a range of stylistic features to add description. Below you can look at the video by clicking on the link and then a PDF with the children's writing.

Day of Dance

Saturday 29th April is International Day of Dance. To celebrate this, every child from Reception to Year 6 worked with a specialist Dance teacher (Elise Lilley) to learn a routine in 30 minutes. In year 6 we learnt the Lindyhop/Jive.

Miss Vickers brought a newt, which she had found in the school pond, for us to look at ad discuss. The children were very inquisitive during the session.

French - À l'école (At School)

Today we learnt and practised saying the French words for school subjects. As you can see some of the children have really taken on board how to pronounce the words in French.
