What we are learning
Reading
This half term, we will continue with our class reader, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. We will also read the graphic novel, The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Later in the term will use a picture book as part of our Literature Festival. Alongside this fiction we will focus on some non-fiction texts to support other curriculum subjects. In these sessions we will consider layout, organisation, purpose, viewpoint and word choice.
Writing
Most of our writing will be linked to The Arrival and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. We will be writing recounts, biographies and explanation texts. In particular, we will recap Y4, Y5 and Y6 SPAG objectives this half term. We will continue to focus on the cumulative re-read process to ensure children can edit their writing effectively.
Maths
This half term, Year 6 maths lessons will focus on ratio, statistics and revisit shape from Year 5. Children will be problem solving and reasoning throughout their learning to deepen their understanding. Children will continue to practise their times tables and arithmetic skills on a daily basis.
Science
This half term, Year 6's science topic is 'Living things and their habitats'. Children will describe and give reasons why living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics, including animals, plants and micro-organisms.
Geography
Children will undertake fieldwork, exploring the physical geography of a local area. They will recognise and describe how a river is formed. They will name and locate countries and cities of the United Kingdom and identify their human and physical characteristics. They will use the 8 points of a compass, 4 and 6 figure grid references and symbols of the Ordnance Survey Map.
