Welcome to Y1H

Welcome to Y1H we are excited to spend the year learning and exploring together.

Our PE days are Wednesday. Please ensure children have appropriate clothes and footwear.

Your child has been allocated a reading day. This is when an adult within school will listen to your child read 1:1 and change their reading books. We kindly ask that children do have their reading book and diary in school with them every day. This will allow for any extra reading to happen and to support children in routine and independence. Children will be having 2 reading books per week and we advise that each book is read at least 3 times as this supports their fluency and confidence with the sounds they are practicing and understanding of the text. 

Spring 1: Our theme is not all heros wear capes.
Our class readers are: Zog and the flying doctors by Julia Donaldson, 3 Little superpigs and The Twits by Roald Dahl.
Literacy: we will be looking at writing a recount, developing the key skills of using phonics, finger spaces, letter formation, capital letters and full stops. 
Maths: Addition and subtraction within 20, Place value to 50, measurement (weight and capacity, length and height) 
Science: Seasonal changes 
History: Florence Nightingale 
RE: Why do we care for people?
Phonics we will be starting Phase 5.

This half term our class readers are: Traction Man (by Mini Grey), Toys in Space (by Mini Grey), Dogger (by Shirley Hughes).  
Literacy we will be looking at writing narratives and developing the key skills of using phonics, capital letters (for start of the sentence and for proper nouns), the suffix ing, and using full stops, exclamation marks and question marks. 
Maths: Measurment (length and height and weight and volume). 
Science: Everyday materials and their properties. 
Phonics - revising phase 5. 
History- How toys have changed over time. 
DT- Making a wind up toy. 
PSHE- how to stay safe.
