What We Are Learning
History -Ancient Greeks
This half term we are learning about : what life was like as a Greek and Spartan soldier, about some key Greek battles and how democracy evolved during this era. We will be studying the epic Greek myth Odysseus .Every week the children will study a different Greek myth including :Pandora's Box, Theseus and Minotaur, Deadelus and Icarus, Arachne the Spinner and The Twelve Labours of Heracles.
Science - The Circulatory System
In Science we will be learning about the structure and function of the heart. The children will learn how to keep their heart happy and healthy and what the blood is made up of and the job it does.
Reading
Our class reader this half term is linked to our History unit- The Odyssey by Homer
Our home readers this term are-
Holes by Louis Sachar and Room Full of Chocolate by Jane Elson
Writing
This half term pupils will plan and write : setting descriptions linked to their class reader, informal letters to and from different characters , newspaper reports based on events from the book and they will plan and write their own Greek myths. They will consolidate spelling, grammar and punctuation rules from year 5 .
Maths
This half term Year 6 will be focusing on place value. They will order, compare and represent different numbers up to the value of ten million. We will round numbers to 10, 100 and 1000 and then within ten million. After that, they will work on negative numbers by counting forwards and backwards through 0. Children will be problem solving and reasoning throughout their learning to deepen their understanding.
