Rhyme Time

We sing a nursery rhyme every day in nursery, repeating the same rhyme every day.  This week our rhyme is:  Hey Diddle, Diddle.

Drop Everything and Read

Learning about the world through stories and developing a love of books is promoted through our daily shared reading sessions.

We hope children enjoy watching and listening to our daily stories.  Children can of course watch the videos again and again and use the stories to inspire play and creative tasks.

Being Imaginative and Expressing Ourselves!

Being creative and making choices about the resources we use are important to our wellbeing and development.  Making choices encourages independence and reflective thinking. The learning opportunities below may inspire greater creativity!

Making Meaningful Marks

Learning ideas:

Can you draw zig zag patterns like the spikes on Zog's back, tail, wings and beard?  Maybe you could draw a picture of Zog, or some of the other Julia Donaldson characters you find out about this week.

Can you copy letters from your name?  Ask a grown up to write your name and see if you can copy some of the letter shapes.  

Drawing lines and circles is a great way to support early writing for children who are not yet independently writing letters. 

It is not an expectation for young nursery children to be able to write letters.  All children's development is different.

Letter Formation Challenge - only for children who are interested and able to form letters.

Making sense of number.

Play games which encourage counting and count objects during play and whilst doing helpful jobs at home.

Number names and numerals are just words and marks.  Helping children by exploring quantities through play, supports secure understanding of number values.

How many snowmen can you count?

Count one snowman at a time, using your fingers to help you to keep track of how many you have counted.  In nursery we say the name of what we are counting, after each number name.

"One snowman, two snowmen, three snowmen..."

Being creative with shapes

Explore shapes and patterns.  Where can you see patterns and shapes in the stories were are reading this week?

Think about the size of the patterns you see and the things you create.  Can you talk about big, huge, small, tiny patterns?

Can you make a character out of shapes?
