    EAL at Primrose Hill

    Intent:

    • To foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports EAL (English as an Additional Language) pupils and their families, enabling them to fully engage in all aspects of school life.

    • To recognise, value, and respect the cultural and linguistic identities of EAL pupils, using these as a resource to enrich the educational experience of the whole school community.

    • To develop EAL pupils’ oral and literacy skills so they can confidently and effectively use English across the curriculum, allowing them to reach their full potential in all areas of learning.

    • To provide tailored support for New to English children during their transition into school, ensuring they are able to access the curriculum fully and thrive in their new learning environment.

    EAL Lead:

    Mrs Kate Dryden

    Assessment:

    Children across the school are at varying stages of English language proficiency. To ensure appropriate support for language development, all EAL pupils are assessed using the Bell Foundation’s Proficiency in English Scale.

    Bands:

    A= New to English

    B= Early Acquisition

    C= Developing Competence

    D= Competent

    E= Fluent

    The program gives support strategies and provides practical ways to support EAL learners at each stage of their language development.

    Induction:

    Once a school place is offered, families are invited to visit for a tour, complete the necessary admission forms, and receive an induction booklet to support their transition.
